Located in the far northwest corner of RI, Zambarano Memorial Hospital was faced with a challenge that plagues hospitals around the country: providing a high-quality living environment for its patients with severely limited capital resources to support the invisible infrastructure. This infrastructure includes the utility systems that keep Zambarano Memorial Hospital operational.

The Hospital has no access to natural gas distribution, which limits the facility’s options to heat and cool the campus. ADI Energy assessed the ESCO’s energy conservation and facility improvement measures, including a biomass project that would reduce the hospital’s operating costs, while eliminating its dependence on electricity and oil and reducing harmful emissions. Other measures included a web-based energy management system, and HVAC upgrades.

ADI Energy was selected by OpTerra to partner with their team on the design and installation of the new biomass based central heating plant. The plant was outfitted with high efficiency burners, and the old oil boilers were converted from #6 to #2 oil. Additionally, for the first time in Zambarano’s 100-year history, it would have central cooling from a central steam absorption chiller fed by the central steam plant and new 2-pipe heating and cooling system.

Because this initiative was being implemented in a working hospital for long-term care patients, ADI Energy worked around the schedule of the hospital and created specific steps in the installation process to insure minimal impact to the staff and patients. ADI continues to provide maintenance and training support.
